Saturday, April 14, 2018. see below for times. White Pine Chapter Field Trip to Nisqually John Canyon (part of the Nisqually John HMU)
Leaders: Steve Bunting, Professor Emeritus of Forest and Fire Ecology, University of Idaho
Steve will be assisted by Emily Poor.
Field trip participants from Moscow and Pullman should plan to meet Judy in Pullman at Dissmore’s parking lot (SW corner) at 9:15 am to arrange carpooling. For those who require transportation to Dissmore’s in Pullman there will be one car at Moscow Rosauer’s parking lot (SE Corner) at 8:45 am which will provide transportation. Please be prompt to either meeting place.
The group from Dissmore’s will drive to the river via the Wawawai Grade and make a restroom stop at about 10:00 am at Wawawai Landing (where the WSU rowing team practices). They will then proceed upriver to Nisqually John Landing to meet Steve and any other groups. Participants from the Lewiston-Clarkston area should drive downriver to Nisqually John Landing and plan to be there by 10:30 am. At the Nisqually John landing we will arrange carpooling into the Nisqually John Canyon area. It has limited parking and no restroom.
Please wear sturdy shoes or hiking boots and bring water and lunch. We will spend several hours looking at native bunchgrass and riparian habitat as well as invasive species in these habitats. If you are a birder, bring binoculars because rock wrens, canyon wrens and sparrows should be singing. Remember sunscreen, hats. Long pants are recommended.
If you do not plan to meet at Dissmore’s and choose to drive directly to Nisqually John Landing to join the field trip, please send an email by Friday to whitepine.chapter@gmail.com so we will be aware to expect you.
