“Landscaping with Natives-An Introduction to Using Native Plants in Your Home Landscape”

Presented by long-time gardener and horticulturist Mindy Rider at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 101 2nd Avenue, in Hailey at 6:00 p.m.

By popular demand, the Wood River Chapter of the Idaho Native Plant Society has invited back long-time gardener and horticulturist Mindy Rider to discuss “Landscaping with Natives – An Introduction to Using Native Plants in Your Home Landscape.”   The free talk will be held at 6:00 pm on Thursday, March 27, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 101 2nd Avenue, in Hailey.

With spring in the air and snow melting fast, Rider’s talk is particularly timely.  She’ll begin by exploring the many reasons why native plants are important in our home landscapes and then describe how to analyze a front or backyard, assessing microclimates and how to utilize them to best advantage.  Some native species have very specific growing requirements, and Rider will discuss choosing plants and how to fertilize, water and care for them in both when planting out and over time.  She’ll conclude by sharing some of her favorite native plants for home landscaping.

Mindy Rider has been working with plants for more than 25 years, as a landscaper, on trail crews and farms, as well as in retail, wholesale, and native plant nurseries all over the United States.  In the Wood River Valley, she served as the Food Production Coordinator for The Hunger Coalition for 4 years.  Currently, she co-manages Drinkers of the Wind Farm, a regenerative and agroforestry farm in Bellevue, Idaho.  Mindy is also the owner of High Desert Roots, a new plant business celebrating the native and adapted plants of Idaho’s high desert climate. She loves talking with people about all things “plant and soil” and getting them excited about creating habitat in their own backyards.
