Big Tree Walk, September 13, 9:45 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.; Sawtooth National Recreation Area at Cathedral Pines
For many years the Wood River Chapter of the Idaho Native Plant Society has led an autumn field trip to some of the largest and oldest trees in our area. This fall, we’ll visit a small grove of large Engelmann Spruce less than 10 miles from Ketchum. Participants will be able to help document their height, girth and crown width using specialized forestry equipment. We’ll also discuss forest health, explore how these trees grew so big and continue to thrive.
The hike will be mostly level walking on paved roads or improved paths, however there is a little clambering over deadfall for a very short distance around the tree. Jay Dorr will be the trip leader. Jay has a BS in Forest Resource Management from University of Idaho and recently retired from the Sawtooth National Recreation Area (SNRA) after a 40+ year long career as Trails Manager, Crosscut Saw Coordinator, Lead Blaster, and Air Quality Manager. Jim Rineholt, recently retired long-term forester for the SNRA, will lead participants in the measurement of the spruces.
We are offering several opportunities for participants to join the group: 1) meet at Hailey Park and Ride to leave at 9:00 AM, or 2) meet at Lake Creek Trailhead, 3.4 miles north of Ketchum, to leave at 9:30 AM, or 3) meet at the parking pull out along Highway 75 near Cathedral Pines to leave at 9:45 AM. Carpooling will be encouraged.
